Texture. The texture of an object or piece invites our senses to visually feel the surface. Our mind yearns to touch the differences in planes and is attracted to these multi-surfaced levels. This element is an important part of the construction of textile work whether that is seen through the piecing of a quilt, the back and forth of weaving or delicate hand embroidery. Although these are more traditional ways in which texture is presented, we can also see texture within a space through presentation, the manipulation of previous materials or even the appearance of imagined texture. Beyond Material: Through the Surface explores ways in which textures are achieved through these various techniques. It is the ways in which we are expanding our surfaces to bring about new ways to think about textiles.
